The Holy See

If you have not explored the website of The Holy See , you have no idea what you are missing! Since this blog is authored in English, let's choose the "English" toggle . The site is laid out well, and it only takes a bit of patience before we begin to wander the halls. Here we find a list of all the Dicasteries, Encyclicals and so on that could grab our attention . I decided to look up some things on Sacred Music and stumbled upon this-- Hymns for the Celebration of the Liturgical Year . If you should place "Gregorian Chant" in the search engine, be ready to get hundreds of documents retrieved of every type and description. Here's a nice find in the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music--MP3s of all sorts recorded by teachers and students at the Pontifical Institute . The Liturgical Calendar is nice! Let's check out Easter ! Easter music...what I started to search for in the first place. In any case, you get the idea. Good hunting!

Mr. George Weigel has written an interesting piece discussing what he terms, "Inept Vaticanology." You can find his commentary here .

Catholic Review Online: From Rome and about seminarians

Each week, H.E. Archbishop Edwin O'Brien posts an article in the Catholic Review Online in his " Thoughts on Our Church " column . Today he is visiting the Pontifical North American College in Rome where he is the Chair of the Board of Governors and his thoughts are on seminarians : Another impressive and, indeed, inspiring hallmark of today’s seminarians, in Rome and in our own distinguished St. Mary’s Seminary in Roland Park and Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, is a return to a Eucharistic-centered spirituality . At NAC, all are “on deck” at 6:15 a.m. for morning prayer and 6:30 a.m. community Mass before walking a typical 25 minutes to classes across town. Come evening, one would have to be impressed by the numbers in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament during the voluntary holy hour of exposition. Many seminarians volunteer the fact that they discovered their vocation through devotion to the Blessed Sacrament in parishes where Eucharistic adoration was regularly sc

Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception: Solemn High Mass, June 7th

My colleague who informs me of "all things Tridentine ," has sent this by email: There will be a Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form ( Tridentine) on Saturday the 7th of June at 6 PM. This will NOT be in the Lady of Lourdes Chapel. Instead, it will be celebrated on the Main Altar in the Crypt Chapel of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C . This will be the concluding Mass of the Fraternity's pilgrimage. I will post more if and when I get an update .

Una Voce Carmel: Former FSSP District Superior strengthens St. Mother Theodore Guérin Latin Mass community

I noticed in an earlier post that the F.S.S.P. North American website had not included the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend in its list of apostolates. This is a post from Una Voce Carmel documenting that Fr. George Gabet is now celebrating Mass in this Diocese . Father Gabet will travel to South Bend almost every Sunday to celebrate Mass at St. John the Baptist. He will also offer a daily Latin Mass at Sacred Heart in Fort Wayne. Other priests who are willing and available will say the Sunday Mass in Fort Wayne. Read the full story here . I suppose this is so new that the website has not been updated to reflect it.

Whispers in the Loggia: "Perfect Match"

Rocco Palmo says that Diane Hagg, the religion reporter for the Shreveport Times , blogs that "Bishop-elect Michael Duca's first day in his new diocese has been nothing short of a lovefest." He is already making quite an impact it seems !

NLM: Seton Hall University

Shawn Tribe of the New Liturgical Movement announces that Seton Hall University has initiated celebration of the Novus Ordo Latin Mass on four consecutive Mondays at 6:00 PM (beginning yesterday, March 31st) and will celebrate a Solemn Tridentine Mass on Monday, April 28th. F.S.S.P. Tridentine (Latin) Mass Sites in North America

At least once a day, someone searches for a listing of the F.S.S.P. locations in the United States or Canada. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter celebrates the Tridentine Latin Mass and is located throughout the USA. To find an F.S.S.P. Latin Mass parish by Diocese, go HERE . Note that there is also a FAQ which summarizes many frequent questions (see the link just below the picture of the Tridentine Mass) as well as an entry in the Blogroll and Websites in the right menu which has a link to the F.S.S.P. sites in North America. For international F.S.S.P. locations, search this site .

CERC: Flannery O'Connor: Stalking Pride

There have been mini-libraries that discuss, dissect and analyze the stories of the great Catholic writer, Flannery O'Connor . In this fine review by Amy Wellborn, the "essentials of her writing" are revealed . This review, in short, is an "oldie but goodie." Here is just a snippet: O’Connor’s characters are all afflicted by pride: Intellectual sons and daughters who live to set the world, primarily their ignorant parents, aright; social workers who neglect their own children, self-satisfied unthinking “good people” who rest easily in their own arrogance; the fiercely independent who will not submit their wills to God or anyone else if it kills them. And sometimes, it does. The pride is so fierce, the blindness so dark, it takes an extreme event to shatter it, and here is the purpose of the violence. The violence that O’Connor’s characters experience, either as victims or as participants, shocks them into seeing that they are no better than the r
